What is DTG Printing?
DTG stands for direct-to-garment. The printer lays water-based ink straight onto the fabric, the way an inkjet printer lays ink onto paper. There is no screen, no film and no transfer sheet between your artwork and the shirt, so the print sits in the fibres rather than on top of them. You feel the garment, not the graphic.
That construction is what makes DTG the right choice for:
Photographs and full-colour artwork. Unlimited colours at no extra cost, because the printer mixes them in one pass. A six-colour design costs the same as a one-colour design.
Gradients, shadows and fine detail. Screen printing has to separate every colour onto its own screen, which is why gradients are hard and expensive there. DTG prints them directly.
Small runs. One shirt is a real order. There is no minimum and no setup fee, so a single piece and a hundred pieces go through the same process.
Dark garments. Black, navy and charcoal need a white underbase laid down first and the fabric pre-treated before printing. We run a Schulze Pretreatmaker IV for that step rather than spraying by hand, which is what keeps the white consistent across a run instead of patchy.
Where DTG is the wrong choice: very large runs of a simple one or two colour design, where screen printing costs less per piece, and polyester or performance fabric, where DTF holds better. We will tell you which one your job actually needs when we quote it.

Fabric decides more than anything else. DTG needs cotton or a high-cotton blend to bond properly. DTF sits on top of the fabric and so holds on polyester, tri-blends and performance wear where DTG will not. If you are not sure what your garment is, tell us the brand and style number when you request a quote and we will confirm the method before anything is printed.
Standard print area is 14" x 16". Oversized prints up to 16" x 21" are available for an additional charge, and sizes above XL add $3 per piece.

Hoodies and sweatshirts — fleece takes DTG well; heavy prints across a chest seam need checking first.
Polo shirts — possible, though most polos go to embroidery because the fabric and the collar suit stitching better.

Tote bags and cotton accessories.
Your own garments — bring them in. We print on customer-supplied blanks, but call or send the brand and style number first so we can confirm the fabric will take DTG. A polyester jersey that arrives expecting DTG becomes a DTF job, and it is better to know that before you buy the blanks.
Best results come from 100% cotton. Cotton-poly blends at 50/50 and above print well with slightly softer colour. Anything below that, or any performance fabric, should go to DTF instead.

Will the print last?
Yes. The ink is cured at high temperature so it bonds into the fibres. Wash inside out in cold water and skip the dryer sheets and it will outlast the garment.
What fabric works best?
100% cotton gives the best result. Cotton-poly blends from 50/50 upward print well. Polyester and performance fabrics should go to DTF instead — we will tell you which when we see the garment.
Can you print on black and dark shirts?
Yes. Dark garments are pre-treated and printed with a white underbase first. We run a Schulze Pretreatmaker IV for the pre-treatment step, which is what keeps the white even across a whole run rather than blotchy.
Can I bring my own shirts?
Yes. Send the brand and style number when you request your quote so we can confirm the fabric takes DTG before you buy the blanks.
What file should I send?
PNG with a transparent background at 300 DPI or higher is ideal. PDF, AI, SVG and high-resolution JPG also work. If all you have is a photo of a logo, send it anyway and we will tell you what can be done with it.
Is DTG better than screen printing?
Neither is better — they solve different problems. DTG wins on small runs, photographs and designs with many colours. Screen printing wins on large runs of simple designs, where its per-piece price is unbeatable. Tell us the quantity and the artwork and we will tell you which one costs you less.
Turnaround, Same-Day DTG and How to Order
Standard turnaround is 2 to 5 business days from the moment your artwork is approved. That covers almost every DTG order we take.
Same-day DTG is available Monday through Friday on orders placed and approved before noon, and it carries a rush fee. DTG is one of the two methods that can genuinely move that fast, because there are no screens to burn and no film to print — artwork goes from file to press. When the shop is running light we can often take same-day work later in the afternoon, so it is always worth asking.
Saturday and Sunday we take orders online and reply within the hour, but there is no production on the weekend. For a Saturday event, get the order in by Thursday and there is no rush fee at all.
Reorders are faster than first orders. Your artwork stays on file, so a repeat run goes straight to the press.
